Mulk Raj Anand, born in Calcutta, was the author of four novels and a collection of short stories, The Untouchables (1946), Coolie, The Middleman (1949), Raja Saheb (1955) and The Gentleman from Andhra (1961). He also wrote a book of essays, The Shadow and the Act (1963), which contained “some reflections on our times”. Anand died on 12 August 1995. Untouchable: The Story of An Indian Family is a 1997 novel by Mulk Raj Anand, set in the 1960s, which concerns a fictional family of the Indian middle class, the Krishnakays, and their lives. In the novel, the lives of the three sons of the family, Raja Bhai, Murari and Anand, are taken up with their involvement in a communal riot, which ensues after a chowkidar (warder), posing as a member of the Muslim community, rapes Murari's sister and her husband.
